You do not have to select a filter in the menu item for the Smart Search.
What SS means as filters, is preset filters that define the results set.
The actual filters are placed under the "Content Maps" view in the Smart Search.

Also, in your case, I would not worry about the display/presentation aspect at that stage.
As long as you find a way to achieve the desired functionality, you can change the display.

Pavel there are ways to mitigate the Smart Search db tables size, through the SS component configuration.
